Three things you should know in onsite optimization. Indexing, keyword research, and page content writing.

First is Page Indexing. Page indexing refers to informing the search engines of your website pages. In site indexing make sure that:

1. Subpages are easily accessible by search engine bots. Create a sitemap page that links to all pages of your website and place a link to it from the homepage. If you have a large website, break the sitemap up in several parts and keep the total link number under 100 per page. Link from your homepage to deep pages to get them and the sites around them crawled faster.
2. Avoid variables in the URL. They are indexed slowly and often getting no Page Rank. Use Apache's mode rewrite feature to convert your dynamic pages to static. Redirect all old pages to the new ones with a 301 redirect. Note however that if you do that for your established website, search engines will need some time to crawl the new static pages.
3. Get rid of session IDs. Bots rarely index pages with a session IDs because they think that those are different pages (because of the different IDs) with the same content.

Second is Keyword Research. Choosing the right keywords is critical for a success of a website. In doing keyword research:

1. Start your research with more general terms. For example "water".
2. Dig for more specific keywords, e.g. water recycling, water purifier. Based on the list you have just created, do a search for every keyword combination and write down the new keyword combinations. It makes no sense to search for those new terms as you would not get anything new.
3. Think about synonyms that people might search for like "water reuse" and "H2O reprocess". Do a research for them too. Now you should have a decent list of relevant keywords. Optimize your pages for them. Create new pages optimized for the missing keyword combinations and link to them from your existing pages.

Third, writing content with the right keyword density.

1. Your content must contain at least 30% of your keywords. But do not overdo it.
2. Use your primary keyword in your Meta title, Meta description, and Meta keywords.

By indexing your pages and doing some keyword research for your content on your page, you are in the right start on your search engine optimization, which starts with onsite optimization. Onsite optimization relies mainly on the right keyword density and proper use of keywords on the pages.
